Hp Study Finds Many Indian Smbs Still Ignore Printer Security Risks

Let’s be real—cybersecurity in 2026 isn’t just about firewalls and antivirus software anymore. Almost everything we touch in the workplace is connected to the internet. And yes, that includes your office printer.

HP recently released a new report called The Workflow Wakeup, and it shines a much-needed spotlight on a blind spot many of us didn’t even know we had: printer security. The findings are pretty eye-opening. More than half of Indian SMBs (51%, to be exact) treat print security as a low priority—even as hybrid work and digital tools become the new normal.

Why Printers Are Flying Under the Security Radar

The research gathered insights from 200 IT decision-makers and 600 knowledge workers across Indian SMBs (ranging from 50 to 1,000 employees). And here’s where it gets concerning.

Most employees simply don’t see printers as a threat. Around 75% of knowledge workers assume that network printers are secure by default. Nearly half (48%) don’t think printers pose any cybersecurity risk at all.

But here’s the tension: people do worry about their documents. Almost 49% of workers are anxious about confidential files being printed and then seen by the wrong person. That’s a real, everyday fear—and it’s not unfounded.

So what exactly keeps IT leaders up at night when it comes to printing infrastructure? The study highlights a few key risks:

  • Cybersecurity threats targeting connected printers
  • Employees accidentally mishandling or misprinting sensitive materials
  • Managing security across multiple printers in one organization
  • Unauthorized access to print queues or stored files
  • Security gaps in cloud-based scanning workflows

The Good News: Smart Printing Actually Works

Here’s where the story shifts from scary to hopeful. HP doesn’t just point out the problem—they also show a clear path forward.

Among SMBs that have already adopted smart printing technology, 88% reported stronger security outcomes. That’s not a small bump. That’s a game-changer.

And what exactly improved? Businesses pointed to three big wins:

  • Better visibility into printing and scanning activity (90%)
  • Improved compliance with security standards (85%)
  • Stronger enforcement of printing rules and restrictions (83%)

In other words, smart printing doesn’t just lock things down—it helps you see what’s actually happening across your workflows. And that visibility alone can prevent a huge range of mistakes before they turn into breaches.

So, What Should SMBs Do Next?

If you’re running a small or mid-sized business in India, don’t wait for a printer-related incident to wake you up. The technology to fix this already exists, and the proof is in the numbers. Companies that have made the shift aren’t just more secure—they’re also more confident and compliant.

Printers may not be the first thing you think of when you hear “cybersecurity risk.” But maybe they should be. The good news? It’s an easy fix—once you’re paying attention.
